What are the positions developed in the program?
They are what I call the “Fundamental 7 stretching positions”, which are the Pike, Pancake, Bridge, Front split, Side split, Shoulder extension and Squat. I consider these the key stretches for somebody to reach a flexibility level in which they have the freedom to choose (almost) any movement practice they’d like.
How much time do I need to work on this program?
The program includes a very flexible template (yes), in which the minimum that you need to work on any stretch is about 20 minutes a week, and it can go to as much as you’d like. A major concern for me in this program was about establishing minimums, which is something very minimalistic, and then add many options for anybody looking to speed up their progress. In that way, you can always be working on what’s important, and whenever you want to prioritize your stretching or pursuit any position, have more time or interest for it, you have all the tools to do just that. That is quite liberating, because suddenly you have the freedom to choose without the pressure of feeling you are missing something.
Are advanced flexibility goals like the head to toe included, or just simpler levels like touching your toes?
Any of the 7 fundamental areas are that, areas. This means that a movement like the pike can be just about touching your toes, or you can take it to a level of putting your head to your toe. We use progressions for that matter, so you can really get to the level that is optimal for YOU.
Does the program use ballistics, loaded stretching, pnf, passive stretching, active methods, dynamic flexibility, etc?
Yes, it does. Just as we use progressions on one part of the program, we use variations for another one. This means that we provide tools that really cover all of the stretching techniques. We do this in a very organized manner so you can simply see what’s important and play with different approaches. In that way, you can really discover what are the best tools for yourself!
Does this program helps with yoga, calisthenics, martial arts, dance, etc?
The premise of the fundamental stretching areas is that one will get a very high level of flexibility that allows him or her to then do any type of movement practice. What this means is that, even though the program does not have a focus on yoga or dancing movements, the goal is to create a very solid base of flexibility that allows that person to easily reach any other flexibility goal. In my case, I always make sure I have these fundamental stretches covered, and that really improves my level to very rapidly reach other positions like a Downward dog or a Pigeon pose. I have been surprised on how well prepared I am for practices like Acroyoga, Krav maga or Gymnastics, all of which I have attended and have never felt limited by my flexibility. In other words, the initial adaptation period that is common is now reduced and sometimes even eliminated in flexibility terms, so you can focus on the experience of learning, playing and exploring without the rigors of feeling intrinsically limited.
Will this help me if I have an injury, have postural problems or want to get supple?
From the start I talk about stretching having many purposes, and range of motion acquisition is the focus of this program. I am not saying that doing these stretches won’t help you with other pursuits, and for example I am constantly reminding you about the safety concerns, the proper posture and the mental aspect of stretching, but those just aren’t the major focus here. Can I do this program at home?
You can do this program by yourself and at home.
Will anything be shipped to me?
No. This is a digital program and all files (videos and pdfs) will be downloaded to your computer.
What is the necessary equipment?
Some recommended equipment is:
- Resistance bands
- A soft mat, grass or floor
At all times I encourage you to improvise with objects most people have like towels, so don’t worry about that! The most important thing equipment-wise is the elastic band, besides that, all you need is the commitment to better yourself.
