These last months have presented me a lot of new experiences. Being at my last formal semester in Law, it’s time to apply for interships and get into that challenging transition from school to work. If I’ve learned something, it’s this: the only option is really to be yourself.
You see, for most of my career I’ve felt like an alien. I study law, but I’m not the typical lawyer. For me it’s not about contracts, torts, trials and negotiations; it is about rights, politics, theories of justice and being able to help others. It is about dominating this tool called Law enough to put it into service for those who need it the most: the people who can’t pay a dime, but will do anything beyond their capacities for you to accept sitting with them to drink some coffee (payed by them!)
What do you do when you feel that you don’t belong anywhere? That everything that you have loved, pursued and nourished it’s not valued? I can tell you one thing: you don’t try to act out.
I made that mistake. In the last month, in my desperation for finding a job, I’ve done things I thought I never would. I have applied to Oil companies, I have dressed up, tried to show interest and come up with motives for why “I’m dying for working at Coca-Cola!”. And guess what? It was evident.
Abraham Lincoln warned us: “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time”. The fact of the matter is that people know. They can see through your masks: whatever you are trying to convey through words, there is something beyond them that people can grasp: it’s called passion, and you can it see when it’s there. Continuing trying to keep up with your lies it’s disrespectful for THEM and for YOU, and a waste the time for both.
Luckily, life got me back on track and that company showed no interest for me. Do I feel bad? No, because I know it’s not a personal attack, but just a matter of difference. And as different from others as you feel, remember this: people appreciate more disappointing honesty than condescending falseness.
